River Water Rescue Basics

Respond safely to river incidents

This guide outlines river rescue principles for lay responders: scene safety, calling help, using reach or throw devices, and what not to do in swiftwater situations.

Assess and call for help

Call emergency services, note location and conditions, and avoid entering fast water.

Reach or throw first

Use a paddle, branch, rope, or throw bag; lie down to avoid being pulled in.

Guide the victim

Instruct them to grab and hold; pull steadily and keep low for balance.

After rescue

Warm the person, monitor breathing, and hand off to EMS; do not leave them alone.
